Healed With a Kiss
March 12th 2008 10:42
I will always remember my first passionate kiss, her name was Michelle and I was 12 years old. Now she wasn’t the best looking girl in the world and if my memory serves me correctly she didn’t give me much choice in the matter, and the whole experience at best was a bit wet and sloppy. But even with all the negative points I can still remember arriving home that night with a smile on my face and a strange sense of satisfaction that didn’t go away for days. Many people will tell me that it was the teenage hormones that made me feel so happy, but even now a good passionate kiss from my wife is enough to make me grin like a moron all day, and I am sure everyone will agree that they feel pretty good after a great kiss. But why is this so? What happens in the body every time we lock lips that makes us feel so great and so relaxed? It just so happens that apart from the nice feeling we get a good long passionate kiss has many other positive side effects, and is actually good for your health.
When we kiss we exchange millions of bacteria and excessive amounts of saliva. Now while this may sound pretty gross it is actually beneficial to your basic oral hygiene. Dentist Dr Ron Turner says “Saliva is the mouths natural defence against bacteria. When we kiss not only do we transfer enough saliva to help battle tooth decay and gum disease but it also stimulates your own saliva production”. Research has shown that a good long kiss can actually be more beneficial than chewing gum in the prevention of cavities as our saliva contains calcium and phosphorus.
“Kissing-and I mean like, yummy, smacking kissing - is the most delicious, most beautiful and passionate thing that two people can do, bar none. Better than sex, hands down.” Actress Drew Barrymore.
A big sloppy kiss can also be a little bit of a work out. When you smooch you will use 34 muscles and burn off 6.4 calories. Now although that doesn’t sound like a lot if you manage to get 10 smooches a day that adds up to 64 calories, it won’t exactly burn off the 540 calories that were in that Big Mac you had last night, but at least you will have had fun trying.
“Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.” Albert Einstein
But the real benefits to kissing have to be the ability to relieve tension, build self esteem and add years to your life. A long passionate kiss produces some amazing responses in the body. It quickens the heart rate, dilates the pupils and deepens our breathing allowing more oxygen to travel to our muscles instantly relaxing us. Recent studies have also revealed that levels of cortisol, which is the hormone that controls stress, significantly drop in both sexes while kissing, confirming that sloppy smooching really is a great stress buster. This is great news when you consider that stress related diseases are the world’s biggest killer.
So go away right now and grab your partner by the waist and give them a long and gentle kiss it is not only good for both of you but it may also lead to something else, which I can tell you now has many more health benefits, but that’s a whole different article he he.
