For centuries the great teachers of the world have taught us that gratitude is the key to true wealth and happiness. Cicero said that “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the other.” While Buddha said “Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.” The truth is how we can be happy when all we do is complain about the things we have around us. Showing gratitude for even the smallest of things will open your heart and mind to more things to be grateful for. It’s a beautiful cycle that will lift your life to levels that you never thought were possible.
So go and enjoy the beauty that is your life and try these seven simple things along the way, you’ll be amazed at you can achieve.
1. Smile at Strangers
His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama says that the true meaning of life is “To contribute to other people’s happiness”. You can contribute to other people’s happiness everyday, simply by spreading your own joy with a smile. It will not only make the person who sits next to you on the bus or to the lady serving you your morning coffee feel good but if they pass the smile on then they pass it on you, little old you, will have helped make the world a happier place to be.
2. Take Compliments
I never understand it when people don’t take compliments. Compliments are given for a reason, so take it on board and agree with them because there is no doubt about it you do look beautiful today, your hair is perfect, you have lost weight, that new suit really does look good on you and trust me you do have a great bum.
3. Do Everything With Enthusiasm
In his book ‘The Alchemist’ Paolo Coelho says “There is a universal language it is the language of enthusiasm, of things accomplished with love and purpose, and as part of a search for something believed in and desired”. Chase your dreams and do it with total enthusiasm because if you do anything is possible.
4. Treat Yourself
When your pay packet comes don’t ever forget to pay yourself before everything else. 10 % of your wages should be saved and 10 % should be spent on you and your happiness. Even if it is only a box of your favourite ice cream or a massage treating your self every week is essential otherwise what are you working for?
5. Give to Charity
Even if it is only the change from you Big Mac put it in the charity box because it all adds up. If you are one of 200 people who commit to giving 10c a day that adds up to $20 or $140 a week and about $560 a month, which is hardly a measly sum. But there is another selfish reason for giving, when you give something from your heart without expecting anything in return; your good deed will return to you in some amazing and unexpected ways.
6. Pray
Prayer does not have to be about any sort of religious ceremony; to me it is about making it known to yourself and the universe exactly what it is you are grateful for in your life. It is also a great way to affirm your plans, goals and dreams to the universe.
7. Be Thankful for You
The website ‘Abundance-and-Happiness.com’ says, “When you are in a sincere state of gratitude your energy is one of acceptance and harmony. You resonate and as a result project a much higher vibrational frequency, which is exactly what attracts to you the events, conditions, and circumstances that you desire”. There is no doubt that being grateful for everything that is in your life is the key to leading a truly wealthy life. But it’s not about being grateful for the materiel things that you own, it’s about being grateful the people around you and the special moments they bring to your life. It’s about being grateful for the events that have made you the person you are today good and bad that have brought you to this particular point in your life, but beyond all of this it is most important to be grateful for just being you.
